S2SA Safety & Health Week 2023 Photo Challenge

We are excited to announce the Sales and Service Safety Association (S2SA) Safety & Health Week 2023 Photo Contest winners!

Safety and Health Week, held annually during the first week of May (1st – 5th), emphasizes the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

This year, we invited our members to participate in our inaugural contest to raise awareness and encourage proactive safety measures. The contest encouraged members to identify hazards in various environments and submit photographs showcasing them.

Contest Categories

We had three different categories,

Best Before and After Showcase the identification and correction of hazards.

Best Committee Picture: Depict a group effort in identifying and mitigating hazards.

Most Innovative Solution to a Safety Hazard: Demonstrate creative problem-solving to a safety hazard.

Category: Best Committee Picture

Winner: Birchwood Reconditioning Center

Birchwood Reconditioning Center wins the contest for Best Committee Picture: depicting a group effort in identifying and mitigating hazards. Birchwood is one of S2SA’s long-standing SAFE Work Certified Members.

Birchwood’s entry into the contest with a committee lead Safety initiative was a Scavenger Hunt aimed at refreshing their team members’ knowledge of important safety information in order to prevent hazards in the workplace. The Scavenger Hunt was focused on injury prevention and emergency preparedness in the workplace.

Questions on the scavenger hunt were anything from who was on the committee, how to inspect tools, what hazards are in your jobs, where the first aid kits and eye wash stations are found, who are first aid attendants, and how to report incidents and near misses.

Category: Most Innovative Solution to a Safety Hazard

Winner: Pembina Coop

Pembina Coop wins the contest’s Most Innovative Solution to a Safety Hazard Category: demonstrating creative problem-solving to a safety hazard. for implementing the Auto Stak as an Ergonomic Solution. Pembina Coop is one of the many companies working towards SAFE Work Certification using S2SA’s four-phase safety program development system.

Pembina Coop has seen many advantages of the auto stack as the equipment eliminates manual lifting and manual moving of heavy wood products, which can lead to MSI injuries or other types of incidents.

The use of the auto Stak at Pembina Coop has also been found to reduce slip and fall incident risks that often occur when carrying products. Better stock organization and safer storage and moving of materials have been seen as great advantages.

Category: Best Before and After

Winner: Globe Property Management

Global Property Management is the contest winner for the Best Before and After category: Showcasing the identification and correction of hazards. Global Property Management is a property management company and a new S2SA member who has achieved SAFE Work Certification.

Category: Best Before and After

Winner: Vickar

Vickar also won in the category for best before and after pictures for installing guarding on their hydraulic presses since this is a common issue with our members.

Vickar is an active member of S2SA, with 3 of their locations successfully achieving SAFE Work Certification with additional locations in the certification process.

Hydraulic press guarding is not installed on purchase, which poses a significant safety hazard for our members. The installation of guarding protects workers from safety hazards, including flying debris or piece work and other hazards.
